Show Pig Management Guide

Making the "Final Drive" - Show Pig Management Guide

The show pig industry is a very competitive game. The management of your swine project will determine the difference between being in the "final drive" or watching from the sidelines. This Management Guide is intended to help you learn basic fitting and management techniques to help you make your animal look its absolute best on show day.

Keep in mind that these are just guidelines and we can not guarantee your success.

(click titles below for more information)

  • Getting started-Choosing the right size pig for your fair
  • After you choose your project and get your pig home
  • Two months before the show
  • One month before the show
  • The week of the fair
  • It's Show Time-The day you have been waiting for!
  • Show day is the culmination of all of your hard work!

If you have done the proper things prior to the fair, show day will be a rewarding experience.

    Show Day Checklist:

    • Get up early.
    • Take your pig to the wash rack and thoroughly wash the animal, making sure to get all the soap out of the hair. Avoid getting water in the pig's ears.
    • Clean your animal's pen and re-bed with clean shavings.
    • Feed your pig according to the amount of fill that is needed. Taller, narrower pigs look good fuller; shorter, wider pigs look better less full.
    • Water your pigs.
    • Let your pigs rest as much as possible.
    • Take your pigs back to the wash rack just prior to going into the ring. Rinse them off thoroughly and make sure they are clean.
    • Make sure that YOU are neat, clean and well-presented.
    • Be courteous at all times.
    • Keep your pig 15 to 20 feet away from the judge and in direct sight of the judge at all times.
    • Use your whip to guide your pig. DO NOT beat your animal.
    • Use your brush to clean only. DO NOT use it as a guide.
    • WIN WITHOUT BRAGGING!
    • LOSE WITHOUT COMPLAINING!
    • HAVE FUN!
